Protesters March to Columbus Park

By Phil Orlandella

Calling for the end of Columbus Day commemorations, dozens of protesters marched from Park Street to the North End ending their march at Christopher Columbus Park where they placed negative signs around the statue of the navigator.

One sign read, “Christopher Columbus was a genocidal slave trader.” Another read, “Columbus Day celebrates genocide.”

Protesters called their quest “Sink Columbus” preaching for the October holiday to be changed to Indigenous People’s Day.

The march was organized because of the apparent atrocities Columbus committed against native people.

Several Massachusetts cities and/or towns have already declared the holiday to Indigenous People’s Day including Cambridge, Amherst and Northampton.
