Mah Johngg Club – Thursdays at 11:00 a.m. –  2:00 p.m.

Come and play the American-style variant of this tile-based game that originated in China and requires skill, strategy, and calculation. Beginners are welcome. Please note that beginner instruction begins at 11:00 a.m. No sign up is required.

Book Discussion Club for Adults – Wednesday October 18 – 6:30 p.m.

October’s book is the 1938 gothic thriller “Rebecca” by Daphne Du Maurier. Copies can be picked up at the library’s front desk. Crime author Alex Barclay called Rebecca “a brilliantly constructed novel – the ultimate in psychological suspense, instantly gripping and haunting, Rebecca will stay with you forever.”

The Art of Excellent Listening: Improving Your Listening Skills for Greater Civility and Understanding in a Changing World – Wednesdays, October 4 – 18, 2017 @ 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

You can hear…but are you listening? Join Kim Kerrigan as he teaches you how to be a better listener in this 3 week workshop. Learn how to fully understand the messages you receive as well as how to communicate messages clearly and diplomatically. PROGRAMS CELEBRATING ITALIAN HERITAGE MONTH

Presentation: The Photographs of Anthony V. Riccio – Saturday October 7 at 11:00 a.m.

Anthony V. Riccio will discuss his book, “From Italy to Boston’s North End – The Photographs of Anthony V. Riccio 1972-1982,” which documents the arc of the Italian American immigrant experience, with images of daily life taken in the rural villages of southern Italy to everyday life in one of America’s most famous Italian American enclaves, Boston’s North End.  Funded by the Friends of the North End Branch Library.

Documentary: “Boston’s North End: An Italian American Story” – Saturday October 14 at 10:00 a.m. Join us for a viewing of the first feature-length film that chronicles the vibrant Italian-American community that has called the North End of Boston home for well over 100 years.  Based on historical records and interviews with Italian American North Enders, the film features original music, home videos, and photographs. Alex Goldfeld, author of “The North End: a Brief History of America’s Oldest Neighborhood,” and President of the North End Historical Society, will introduce the film.

Getting Started with Your Italian Genealogy – Wednesday, October 25 at 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Celebrate Italian Heritage Month by discovering more about your Italian roots! Join Rhonda R. McClure, Senior Genealogist at the New England Historic Genealogical Society, who will give an introduction to Italian family history research. She will discuss the kinds of records and resources you can use to explore your Italian heritage.

October 10 from 3:30-5:00 pm: Ada Lovelace Day Tinkering Ada Lovelace was the woman who created the algorithm that later help build today’s modern computers! Celebrate her day and join us for an afternoon filled with tinkering on computers and treats.  All ages welcome.
