NEWRA Attempts to Change Election Term Bylaws

By Phil Orlandella

North End/Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWRA) will hold its annual meeting where members will select officers for 2017 at its Thursday, October 13 monthly meeting that will be held at the Nazarro Center on the second Thursday of each month at 7 pm.

A proposal to extend term limits was suggested by several members, and by the nominating committee, reviewed by the executive committee and has been proposed formally by NEWRA’s bylaws committee.

“No officer may serve for more than two years consecutively,” according to current NEWRA bylaws.

The proposed change would state, “No officer may serve for more than four years consecutively in the same position.”

The bylaw change will be voted on at the October monthly meeting unless the membership or executive committee decides to delay the vote.

NEWRA did not explain why the bylaw needs to be changed or who recommended the change.

Reportedly, the bylaw change is an attempt to keep current President Ford Cavallari in the office.

It also appears that NEWRA’s Election Committee was unable to find a candidate to run for President.

Since NEWRA was established, there has never been an attempt to alter its election bylaw term limits.
