The City of Boston has spun its wheels at a fast pace to make it convenient and more specifically safer for cyclists to move through the streets. There are already rules, regulations and painted areas covering this issue.
Now legislators want to add another rule that is controversial by banning vehicles from stopping in bike lanes and issuing stiff penalties for those who do so.
While the bill is well intended, it doesn’t take into account dropping off seniors or disabled people, residents who can’t find a parking space near their homes to drop off shopping or deliveries to the business community.
Boston already has a $100 fine on the books but those doing the enforcement should look at the situation before running out of ink.
Councilor Sal LaMattina believes that the police should look at situations when people are taking out their shopping because there is no place to park near their homes, or picking up seniors or disabled persons and they should be a little more tolerable.
Safety for bicyclists is paramount, however, under certain scenarios like those mentioned above, maybe a little leeway should be given.
