Organizers from the first Stephen’s Run 5K Road Race presented a $5,000 donation check on Tuesday to the New England Center for Homeless Veterans. Accepting the check was NECHV President and CEO Andrew McCawley with Boston Commissioner of Veterans Services, Francisco Urena. Representing Stephen’s Run was State Representative Aaron Michlewitz, Matthew Imbergamo, Sandra Harcourt and Amy Hand.

The charity road race held in October 2013 was named in honor of Stephen Perez, a native North Ender and three tour Army veteran who served in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2012, the 23 year old was murdered in a senseless act of violence in downtown Boston. In addition to the NECHV contribution, proceeds from Stephen’s Run also went to the Rosanne Sdoia Recovery Fund.

Organizers are hopeful that Stephen’s Run will become an annual event. Last year, the 5K road race was held on the morning of Columbus Day with a start at the North End’s Prado (Paul Revere Mall) on Hanover Street following a path through historic downtown Boston
